Drug Labeling and Medication Safety

Description

Drug labeling is a tool for communicating important drug product information to healthcare practitioners, including pharmacists. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) collaborates with the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) and the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) to implement labeling requirements and safety standards for drug labeling.  By providing clear and accurate drug labeling, healthcare practitioners can safely use the drug product and effectively optimize patient health. This session provides a greater understanding of the significance of drug labeling statements, discusses how the FDA, USP and ISMP interact to address medication safety issues, and describes the important role pharmacists have in reporting medication errors to improve drug labeling and medication safety.
