Each year JFPS helps federal pharmacists and pharmacy technicians improve their clinical and patient care services and pharmacy management operations through a variety of high-quality educational sessions.
JFPS is developed by pharmacy experts to share ideas regarding strategies, leading change, effective processes, what's working, and challenges in federal pharmacy. All education sessions fit within one of the following education and training tracks, which are based on mission-critical tasks for federal pharmacists:
- Clinical Patient Care: These sessions cover disease states and their management and may include new drug reviews, pharmacogenomics, pain management, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
- Implementing Patient-Centered Care: These sessions cover best practices to successfully plan and implement patient-centered care, including medical home programs and medication therapy management (MTM) models of care, and topics such as polypharmacy, medication safety, medication adherence, transitions of care, and provider status.
- Pharmacy Business Operations, Management, and Professional Leadership: These sessions focus on operational and leadership skills needed to effectively work in or lead a federal pharmacy. Topics may include provider status, workload recapture, pharmacy personnel management, formulary management implementation, controlled substance accountability and ordering, pharmacy financial management and logistics, automation system implementation, reducing medication errors, compounding, legislative/regulatory updates and pharmacy law.
Continuing Pharmacy Education Information
Depending on their organization or branch of service, qualified attendees are able to earn up to 21 hours of continuing pharmacy education (CPE) credit. Continuing pharmacy education is recorded online.
APhA is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.
JFPS 2018 education sessions are designed for federal pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.
- Courses appropriate for pharmacist participation are designated by an ACPE universal activity number ending in the letter "P."
- Courses appropriate for pharmacy technician participation are designated by an ACPE universal activity number ending in the letter "T." The number of credit hours is based on the amount of content applicable to pharmacy technicians. Please review the ACPE information for each session to determine the amount of credit offered.
To help you more efficiently plan your time, the content of the education sessions is categorized into two levels of expertise:
- Level 1: Baseline knowledge of the subject area is required. The information presented is mostly introductory.
- Level 2: Some prior subject area knowledge and expertise are required, but extensive expertise is not.
- Level 3: Substantial knowledge and experience in the subject area are required. Information is provided at a level to expand current expertise.
Activity types are designed to give attendees an idea of the intended outcome of a continuing pharmacy education (CPE) activity.
- Knowledge-based activities are designed to enhance or add to pharmacists' or technicians' knowledge of a topic; mostly didactic sessions.
- Application-based activities provide pharmacists and technicians with opportunities to apply their knowledge, usually through case studies or other application activities.
- Practice-based activities are longer, more comprehensive activities of at least 15 hours that incorporate knowledge, skills, and performance. These activities are also known as certificate training programs.
- Check with the Board of Pharmacy in your state regarding specific continuing pharmacy education requirements.
- Florida-licensed pharmacists: To ensure that your continuing pharmacy education participation can be filed with the state-mandated CE Broker system you must provide APhA with your Florida license number. To check, log on to pharmacist.com and select My Account, then License Information.

PharmTalks®, APhA’s dynamic education platform, showcase the latest innovative ideas created and developed by pharmacists for pharmacists—nowhere else will your discoveries reach such a wide-ranging audience from every area of pharmacy.
PharmTalk sessions are TED-style talks that feature a 10-minute presentation of an innovation followed by a 5-minute Q&A to create an interactive session. View a recent PharmTalk presentation.
APhA is currently accepting submissions for the JFPS 2018 PharmTalk Series. Submit your best practice ideas in the following topic areas:
- Clinical Pharmacy
- Hospital Inpatient Services
- Pharmacy Operations
Submissions must include the following sections:
- Title: Title of your presentation.
- Background: Describe relevant background information that demonstrates the need for your innovation. Focus on needs that are specific to your practice site and/or patient population rather than broadly describing national issues.
- Description of the activity: Describe the development and implementation of your innovation, including details such as practice setting(s), patient population(s), and daily operations.
- Program Assessment/Outcomes/Improvement: Describe the process for assessment and quality improvement, including goals of your innovation and/or outcomes achieved.
- Financial Viability: Describe the business model for how the service is funded and/or expenses are justified (specific dollar amounts are not required).
- Future Directions: Describe future goals of your innovation.
Only one submission per candidate is allowed. Submissions that best fit the vision for each session will be accepted for presentation. This is a voluntary presentation and participants are responsible for their own expenses; no honorarium is provided. Submission status and presentation instructions will be sent in August via email.

APhA is seeking abstracts for the JFPS 2018 poster program that demonstrate how you are connecting, collaborating, and innovating in pharmacy practice and pharmacy-focused scientific research on issues relevant to federal pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. Poster authors will be notified of the status of their abstract submission via e-mail by Tuesday, July 31.

JFPS 2017 Posters
JFPS 2017 authors are invited to present their work at JFPS 2018. Abstracts accepted for presentation at JFPS 2017 do not require re-submission for JFPS 2018. Authors will receive an email with details.
Poster presenters must be pharmacists or pharmacy technicians who are:
- Uniformed members of the Public Health Services or Department of Defense
- Civilian pharmacists or technicians assigned to federal agencies
- Retired or reserve members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, or Public Health Service
Submit abstracts to one of the following three categories:
- Contributed Research: Abstracts present the findings of original research on issues relevant to practicing pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. Research with patients requires IRB approval. (If research is not completed at the time of submission, select the “Project in Progress” * option.)
- Innovative Practice Report: Practitioners who have implemented a new idea or strategy for the delivery of patient care, or a creative application of existing techniques or services, are encouraged to share their innovation with colleagues. This includes process improvement projects that show improved patient outcomes. Ideas and practices that are new to the region, system, or practice setting may be considered. (If practices in this category do not have outcomes ready to report at the time of submission, select the “Project in Progress” * option.)
- Encore Presentation: Submissions to this category must meet all submission and evaluation criteria for original papers, with the exception that the paper has been previously presented at a local, state, or national meeting within 12 months of the submission deadline. Submission requires the original presentation citation.
*Projects in Progress: Projects in progress must have been started and in the process of collecting data or in the process of implementing an innovative practice or process improvement. Completed data or initial outcomes must be available for presentation at JFPS 2018.

Financial Disclosures and Use of Logos
Financial disclosures for all poster authors will be collected during the online abstract submission process. Authors who have no relevant financial relationships must state that they have nothing to disclose. A financial disclosure statement must be included on all accepted and displayed posters.
Because the “Meet the Researchers” session offers CPE credit, the poster presentations must follow the policy set forth by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) related to commercial interests:
- A commercial interest is any entity producing, marketing, re-selling, or distributing health care goods or services consumed by, or used on, patients.
- Providers of clinical service directly to patients are NOT commercial interests.
How does this translate to your poster and use of logos?
- No logos for pharmaceutical companies
- OK to use logos for hospitals, universities, schools, health care networks
- OK to use logos for community pharmacies (e.g., Walgreens, Kroger) IF they are also a provider of clinical care directly to patients
The Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) Standards for Commercial Support require that all continuing pharmacy education providers “…be able to show that everyone who is in a position to control the content of an educational activity has disclosed to the provider [and therefore the participants] all relevant financial relationships with any commercial interest.” As defined by ACPE, “relevant financial relationships” are financial relationships in any amount occurring within the past 12 months that create a conflict of interest. A “commercial interest” is defined as any entity that produces, markets, resells, or distributes health care goods or services to be consumed by, or used on, patients. (Providers of clinical services directly to patients are not commercial interests.) Financial relationships are those in which the individual – or the individual’s spouse or partner – benefits by receiving a salary, royalty, intellectual property rights, consulting fee, grants, stock holdings, honoraria, gifts, or other financial benefit.
The Author(s) grant to APhA in perpetuity the exclusive right to print, publish, reproduce, lease, copy, and distribute (either in print or electronic form) the abstract. APhA will have the exclusive right to register the abstract in its own name and to obtain any renewals of the copyrights that may be permitted by law. The Author(s) warrant that the abstract is original; that the Author(s) own and have the right to convey all the rights herein conveyed to APhA; and that all content therein does not infringe any copyright, violate any property rights, or contain any scandalous or unlawful matter.
Author(s) shall defend, indemnify, and hold harmless APhA, its officers, directors, employees, and agents, against all liability or loss sustained as the result of a claim by a third-party based upon or arising out of any act or failure to act of Author(s) or the alleged breach by Author(s) of any representation, warranty, or agreement herein, including for any claims based upon any intellectual property violations. The warranties, representations and indemnities will survive the termination of this Agreement. Author(s) hereby release and discharge APhA, its officers, directors, employees, and agents, from any and all claims, demands, and causes of action that Author(s) may have against it by reason of its exercise of its rights hereunder including, without limitation, any claims based on the right of privacy, the right of publicity, copyright, libel, or slander.
- Be as specific, descriptive, and thorough as possible about project/study design, methods, data collection and analysis, results, and conclusion/implications
- Use complete sentences
- Include background information to justify why this program was created
- Define time periods; include dates, where applicable
- Describe patient population(s)
- Define acronyms
- Avoid the use of jargon
- Check spelling and grammar
- Do not identify facility or unit in the body of the abstract
Abstract Review and Notification
Abstracts submitted by June 20, 2018 for JFPS 2018 will be reviewed by the JFPS 2018 Educational Programming Committee. All abstracts are subjected to a double-blind peer review. Each abstract will be evaluated according to the following criteria:
- Relevance – makes important contribution to federal pharmacy practice.
- Originality – new, innovative approaches to move the pharmacy profession forward.
- Clear statement of question(s) to be answered or objective(s) to be met.
- Study/project design – project design clearly stated, appropriate to achieve objectives, and variables controlled. Setting and patient population described.
- Methods and data collection process/analysis clearly descried. Source(s) of data, how it is being collected. Data analysis/evaluation procedures target project outcomes and support project objectives. Compare different strategies.
- Results – findings are reported for each objective or research question. Include data in your results section. (Projects in Progress must report any initial findings.)
- Implications of findings for pharmacy practice, policy theory, or further research are discussed and should focus on tangible or significant results. Describe how innovation is adaptable to other practice sites/settings. (Projects in Progress will describe potential implications.)
- Conclusions are appropriately stated, based on results. (Projects in Progress will not include Conclusions on the abstract; however, conclusions should be included in the final poster presentation.)
- Incomplete or poorly written abstracts will be rejected.
Accepted abstracts will be presented at JFPS 2018 as poster presentations. Posters will be displayed during the conference from Sunday, October 21 through Wednesday, October 24. Poster presenters will be required to register for JFPS 2018 and be available to discuss their poster during the assigned “Meet the Researchers” session on Monday, October 22 or Tuesday, October 23.
Award plaques will be awarded for first place in each topic area, and one overall best of seminar. Special recognition ribbons will be awarded to the highest scoring poster that did not win its category. Posters are judged on Technical Merit, Originality, and Presentation.
To be eligible for the JFPS 2018 poster award program, the following requirements must be met:
- The poster must be accepted for presentation.
- Poster presenters must submit a PDF or PowerPoint file of their final poster by Friday, September 28.
- The poster must be displayed at JFPS 2018.
- The poster presentation must participate in the assigned “Meet the Researchers” session.
Accepted abstracts that are presented at JFPS 2018 will be e-published in the January/February 2019 issue of the Journal of the American Pharmacists Association (JAPhA) at www.japha.org. APhA holds first right of refusal for material contained in abstracts when submitted for publication. Full manuscripts that expand on the abstracts should be submitted for publication in an APhA publication, usually JAPhA. Encore presentations are not published in their entirety; only the title, authors, and original citation will appear.
