Commander Ashlee Espiritu is a native of Tampa, Florida who began her naval career in March 2007, commissioning as a Navy Pharmacist. While at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, she served as the Inpatient Pharmacy Division Officer and was selected to fulfill the role of Assistant Department Head, responsible for 150 staff members. Her subsequent tour was U.S. Naval Hospital Okinawa, Japan, where she managed a pharmacy that provided services for 55,000 beneficiaries at six outpatient locations and main hospital inpatient services from 2010 to 2012. In 2012, CDR Espiritu was assigned to Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD). While there, she served in various capacities, including Division Officer and Section Leader for 14 outpatient pharmacies and eventually as Assistant Department Head, responsible for 200 staff. During her tenure at NMCSD, she deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom to the NATO Role III Multinational Medical Unit in Kandahar, Afghanistan. She fulfilled dual roles as Assistant Director for Clinical Support Services and Pharmacy Department Head.
CDR Espiritu reported to Naval Medical Readiness and Training Command Yokosuka, Japan in 2018 as Pharmacy Department Head. She was also selected as Director for Clinical Support Services. As Director, she led 102 staff in 4 technically diverse areas encompassing Pharmacy, Laboratory, Radiology and Physical and Occupational Therapy.
CDR Espiritu received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from McWhorter School of Pharmacy – Samford University in 2005. She completed a Pharmacy Practice Residency at St. Joseph’s Hospital in 2006. She holds a Master of Business Administration with a concentration in Healthcare Administration from American Military University and a Masters of Arts in Defense and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College.
Her personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal.
