As Military Medicine experiences its most significant change, healthcare employees within the Military Health System (MHS) must remain flexible, embrace change, and remain committed to increasing the readiness of the force. Outpatient Pharmacy Services at the Military Treatment Facility (MTF) are in the perfect position to optimize the medically ready-force and ready medical force by expanding the prescribing role of outpatient pharmacists through a Pharmacist-Prescribing Contraception Program. This presentation focuses on the appropriate selection and adjustment of contraception to advance the ready medical force and medically-ready force. Participants will gain valuable insight on how to advance the pharmacy practice in the outpatient setting at the MTF by providing key guidance on how to implement a Pharmacist-Prescribing Contraception Program at the MTF.

Discuss a best practice to implement an outpatient pharmacist-prescribing contraception program at the Military Treatment Facility (MTF) in order to maximize the medically ready force and the ready medical force.
Discuss medical eligibility criteria for contraceptive use in order to assess theoretical or proven risks for prescribing contraception in the outpatient setting.
Determine the most appropriate contraception by choosing or adjusting a patient’s medication therapy based on pharmacologic properties and patient-specific characteristics (lifestyle, physical findings, and laboratory values).
