Electronic Health Record: MHS GENESIS and Federal Update

Description

In 2015 the Department of Defense (DOD) contracted with a multi-vendor team led by Leidos to replace the aging Military Health System’s Electronic Health Records (EHR). Leido’s EHR partner, Cerner, was tasked with providing the DOD a commercial off the shelf or COTS solution to replace CHCS, AHLTA, and Essentris. The replacement system will provide both an inpatient and outpatient pharmacy module and will include new technologies for the DOD, such as inventory management, barcode medication administration, and controlled substance electronic-prescribing. This presentation discusses federal program goals, initiatives, initial implementation successes, lessons learned, and the current and future state of the MHS GENESIS project.

  3. State the challenges of migrating to MHS GENESIS Inventory Management and Barcode Medication Administration (BCMA) and how sites must prepare for this major transition in pharmacy operations.
